The Nature of a Roofing Contractor’s Job

The roof is a very important component of a house. In the simplest definition, the roof protects people from the weather such as rain and intense sunlight. This is the reason roofing is considered to be very important in household management. As with every job that deals with housing and renovation, the challenge for real estate customers and homeowners is to be able to choose suitable contractors for roofing. Continue reading

Sun Damage: Yet Another Reason for Roof Repairs

When people talk about roof damage, they usually consider only rain and snow as the main culprits, not knowing that the sun can also be a suspect. This is yet another reason why homeowners should be more heedful of their roofing system, mostly when the structure is old and has endured over decades. If such is the case, they will want to hire the services of reputable roofing contractors in order to assess the sun damage their roofs have incurred.

Sunlight, while seemingly inert, can be a potentially dangerous element for roofing; even areas that experience fair weather aren’t safe from the sun’s harmful rays. Though they take a long time to manifest, the infrared and ultraviolet radiation in sunlight adversely affects roofing by wearing out the material and causing chemical reactions on the surface (what some people call “weathering”). While the damages can be reduced simply by using lighter roof colors and reflective materials, all roofs can succumb to sun damage over time.

To properly address sun damage, householders need to call upon professional roofing contractors for repairs. Roofers will thoroughly inspect every inch of a roof’s surface and identify portions of the structure that have suffered extensive sun damage. From there, homeowners will have the option of either mending the compromised spot or completely replacing their roofing should the sun damage affect most of the surface.

Differentiating One Contractor from Another

When the subject is about construction, the term ‘contractor’ is always mentioned. However, not many people know that such a term actually has various applications. For instance, there’s the so-called ‘general contractor’ and there’s also the ‘specialty’ or ‘subcontractor’.

Apparently, there are different classifications for contractors. The size, complexity, and requirements of the project in question dictates the type of contractor services that must be employed. With that in mind, it’s crucial to establish the goals you want to achieve for the project before anything else.

It also helps to know the difference between a general contractor and a specialty or subcontractor. Typically, the former’s role is primarily focused on the management and coordination of the project. The latter on the other hand, works under the direction of the former and usually executes just a portion of the overall project requirements such as roofing, plumbing or electrical works to name a few.

The stated differences don’t imply that a general contractor can’t fulfill the requirements of specialty work though. However, in cases where general contractor services are needed for such purposes, only those who carry the applicable specialty licenses will make the cut. Those who don’t would have to resort to subcontracting the work that must be done.

Temporary Savings or Certain Headaches?

Many homeowners would rather not hire roofing contractors to save on expenses. However, while some succeed in their do-it-yourself attempts, most end up regretting their decision to refrain from calling professionals. This is because amateurish installation or repair can lead to more problems than one hopes to avoid. While budget restrictions are a valid consideration, homeowners also have to understand why they need to pay more—for the moment.

Roofing issues get technical. That being said, fixing them requires the application of relevant knowledge and skills. If you lack these, how can you properly assess the condition of your roof?

The Internet can generate significant information about roof problems for you. It can even offer a step-by-step solution to address a certain problem. However, if you lack the technical ability to properly and completely comprehend these ideas, the vast amount of data you gather online will be useless. In the same vein, even if you have correctly identified the problem and solution for it, can you properly execute the latter?

Hiring professionals may be relatively costly. However, for the most part, it is usually worth the price. Don’t you think it is a wise financial decision to spend now in order to avoid incurring future expenses?

Fly away… Skylight Pigeon Fly

Imagine that your house is in an area that has clear weather for several months in a year. You’re looking to reduce the utility expenses in the daytime by cutting back on the lights. However, it is not a good idea for the house to be dark in several locations, even with large windows. Furthermore, you also have to pull the drapes over them for privacy. There’s one solution to that quandary – use skylights, glass panels curved and framed into the roof.

The first important detail to consider is learning about the sun’s orbital path during the day and deciding which slope facing you’d prefer. East-facing roof slopes are optimal for abundant natural light in the early morning hours, for example. You can never have too much of a good thing though; if the room where you intend to have a skylight had a number of windows, its area should not exceed five percent of the room’s floor area, or 15% maximum if there are few windows.

You must have the skylights tinted gray or bronze to prevent sunlight bleaching of objects in the room that will be exposed for the day. This includes any wooden objects such as those made of oak. A tubular skylight works if you have an attic but need natural lighting for the main space. The system involves a solar collector up top and channeled through a tube to the main lighting fixture below. Skylights will work when you want as much illumination as possible.
